FORMAL LETTER

April 15, 2013

Dear Sir:

I am writing to let you know that I am really interested about one of your magazine advertisements, so at the same time, I extend my request for some information about the Antartic Cruise holiday. I am a sophomore.

Firstly, I was wondering whether you could tell me what kind of facilities does the cruise has? I would like to have a single suite, if possible.

Secondly, I often tend to get an upset stomach, therefore, would you mind telling me what the cruise food is like? and if the water is drinkable?, as long as that is all right with you.

And finally, I would be grateful if you could give me more information about prices, for instance, special prices for students, offers, etc.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully.

Nicolás Malz.

Description of an Event - Roger Waters Concert

When I was 14, my father took me to one of the greatest concerts I’ve ever been to. Roger Waters (Pink Floyd), the former leader of my favorite band, was playing The Dark Side Of The Moon in Estadio Nacional on March 14th 2007 at 9 PM. What a way to give a closure to my summer holidays!

After waiting 4 hours to get in, my father and I ran into the stadium to get a good location and we choose to stay in the third row. As time passed by, lots of people were arriving and you could see in their faces expressions of joy, friendship inside of a peaceful place. By 8:30 the stadium was packed to the rafters and by 9 PM, with a British punctuality, the chords of “In The Flesh” filled Santiago and the crowd sang at one voice. The concert ended up at 12 pm aprox.

What I found outstanding was the structure of the stage, and the special effects added to it during the concert. For instance, when they played the whole "Dark Side Of The Moon" set of songs, they showed up a giant prism as the main symbol of the disk and lighted up almost all the stadium. I had never seen something like that.

All in all, it was a day that I won't ever forget and I would love to watch him in concert again because he gives an incredible message of love and social awareness with his songs plus a unique music style.

Science and Humanities: A personal approach

It is socially accepted that Science is more important than Humanities, since Science has a world of different fields of study in which appear some famous names like Einstein, among others. Also, it has better paid jobs than Humanities fields and, in most cases; this is quite a situation for some people when they have to choose a career. For this reasons, Humanities have been underestimated. This is a very important matter as people don’t pay attention to it; a debate arises, requiring an analysis: Science and Humanities go hand in hand.

Science and its aims are related to chasing goals and look for research based on facts and data being challenged by discovery, which has certain beauty indeed, for the people who is really into it.

However, when science heads gets stubborn on their work, they obviously need an escape, because an excessive dedication may lead them to madness. Thus, Humanities gives the necessary weapons to scientists related to human feelings, emotions, and relationships, which become useful to create an important and interesting balance, like Aristotle did for instance. Nevertheless, there is also a chance to choose Humanities programs which aren’t less important as they require a huge commitment, in the case of human experiences and their meanings, as in pedagogy.

Science and Humanities share the delight of creation and beauty, and I don’t think that one is more important than another. Moreover, I chose to study pedagogy because I think it’s a way I can develop all my skills to help people, and Humanism is helping me do it, despite the fact that I can earn more or less money.

MUSIC CAN HEAL PEOPLE (Writing Test - Second Draft)

Since lots of years ago, music has been used as an art movement, as a vehicle to express thoughts, wishes and feelings as well, or also with protest endings for social movements. Following this track, music can be used as a tool to lead a person's decision, for instance, some musical pieces are able to heal people.

On the one hand, there are some people who contradict this premise arguing that music has no capacity to make changes in moods and is just an element to give a temporal "distraction".

However, it has been proved that music can touch people's heart and open minds, for example, psychiatrists use in some patients musical therapy including Jazz or Clasical music like symphonies, highlighting the powerful effect of the piano; consequently, it allows people to find peace in their souls and be able to make a positive decision.  According to this, is possible to do this exercise in moments of stress and mental tiredness in peaceful places to give our body a nice relief.

All in all, music can lead us all to feel better and gives us a special day.
